'Playing Together' Sculpture Project

Educational Project

Project Information
Recruited by the fifteen Year 7, 8 & 9 members of the Waverley School Youth Panel (WYP), we were appointed to develop and run a series of workshops to empower the WYP to become leaders, and to be involved with the plans, aspirations and design process of their new school.

We worked with the WYP to produce a series of sculptures, and help them to hone their presentation skills, so that they could secure funding from the senior management team for the next stage of the project.

Focusing on the design aspirations of the WYP we are developing a group of life-sized silhouette sculptures to portray the influence of education upon children’s lives. The installation includes 6 stainless steel silhouettes of Waverley students ranging from pre- school to 6th Form. The smallest will have a brushed surface finish displaying the early years of their education whilst the largest silhouettes will have a mirror polished finish to symbolically represent the completion of their education and the inspiration of their learning that they will take with them as they move onto the next stage of their lives.

Through this project the WYP have had the opportunity to compile portfolios so that they can achieve an Arts Award certificate at bronze level. They have also engaged with the onsite children's centre to involve pre-school children with the project and provide a lasting legacy. to the new school building.

“It was so much fun, I never realised I was learning so much.”

- Adeel, Year 9 Member of the WYP, Waverley School Birmingham
